This one is a pretty easy one for me. I love this soundtrack equally as much as the game it’s attached to. When the first trailer for this game came out the first thing that got me hooked was the soundtrack. I would watch it over and over again to just listen to the score that played underneath the amazing trailer. I’m very into the whole tech noir setting whether it comes to my games, films, anime or books, probably because i’m a tech nerd…Anyway after watching the subsequent trailers each providing new insight into the game itself and giving fans new music to indulge in I needed to buy this game. So being me I decided to splash out on the special edition version of the game, which also included THE SOUNDTRACK! So after playing the game I wanted to go back and listen to the soundtrack. Unfortunately the soundtrack only gave you a few of the tracks that would be included on the separate full soundtrack that would come months later. So listening through this soundtrack over and over…and over, I’ve decided to choose a handful of ones that i’m really addicted to. The soundtrack was done by Michael Mccann, who actually did the soundtrack for Splinter Cell: Double Agent, another amazing soundtrack that is actually free from his official website. The entire playlist for the soundtrack is at this link here.
My favourite songs on the soundtrack are:
Track 1. Icarus / Main Theme The track was from the original trailer for the game. A fantastic track and one that I go to frequently when i’m trying to relax or do some writing.
Track 2. Opening Theme A very Robocop-esque moment. Once the hero has been destroyed the only way to bring him back is to rebuild him.
Track 3. Main Menu …I needn’t say much about this one…kinda speaks for itself.
Track 4. First and Last This track comes from the games opening sequence after the faux on rails section. The song just makes even an opening sequence very strong.
Track 13. After The Crash If you’ve bothered to invest time and many man hours into the story, then this track comes at a pivotal moment in the game when you’re forced to make a difficult decision. One that will change the outcome of later events. It’s a very emotional moment if you choose to simply hide. It’s an even more emotional moment if you fight and still fail at the task at hand.
Track 14. The Hive I don’t really know what to say about this one. This track comes from the main nightclub in the Hengsha district in the game or the 2nd hub world in the game.
Track 23. And Away We Go Buckle up. It’s a very short track but I like it.
Track 24. Namir (Trailer Edit) This was one of the other main trailers for the game. The song was adapted specially for the trailer and was one of the songs that fans of the game requested. The song was used for one of the boss battles in the game. I prefer the trailer version myself.
There was one song that wasn’t included on the soundtrack itself that I was really disappointed about. I track sticks out purely for being the opening track. When you start to play the game, walking through Sarif Industries the beautiful soundtrack is playing in the background. I later found out that there is a throwback to the original Deus Ex game that I never picked up on given that I’ve not had a lot of play time with the game. So here is the track that wasn’t included. You’ll hear some sound effects in the track but it doesn’t diminish the quality of the score. Enjoy!
